Typical story of a 20-something IT-guy

A saying goes, “Throw a stone in the streets of Bangalore, it will most probably land on a Software Engineer”. As a 20-something, South Bangalorean, who has other 20-something Bangalorean friends, there are many behavioural patterns which I have observed(many of it applicable to your’s truly and some completely fictional).

Fresh from college, we join some IT-major, hoping of earning big bucks, give it our everything the first 2 years and then(THEN!) things start to change.

A rebel needs a nice ride

After toiling for many months, the quarter life crises kicks in. Many people are at crossroads. Some would have sacrificed their teenage years and shunned anything fun in the hopes of becoming a success. Then!

Then, everything seems meaningless and confusing, all of a sudden. The guy who used to come to college drunk goes on to get a better job than you, while you, who kissed hairy asses of lecturers in college, end up in a boring, seemingly dead-end job.

Some who had fun in college, who had a wild time in college, start remising about the good old days. Your old girlfriends are getting married..  Its time for a change, its time for the old rebel to come back!

Buy a fucking-bullet(hell yeah!).

Frontiers never explored become a destination all of a sudden. Every rebel aches to be unique and The Bullet is the perfect cure. Its so illogical, its logical!

Only a madman will buy a Bullet!

“I have bought The Ultimate Machine!”, you convince yourself.

Three years later, it turns out 6 out of your 10 friends have bought their Bullets and suddenly, yours seems heavy, fuel guzzling and, mostly importantly, no longer unique. You have been to 2 far-away places on your bike, last one being Ooty, 13 months ago, where the monsoon fury made sure your ride was not only dangerous, but wet and utterly uncomfortable.

A car seems a better option now. “Even the butt ugly Nano will do”, you think for a brief moment when the rain is pounding on your helmet, making it difficult for you to see even 10 metres ahead.

Get-a-digi-cam

Big bucks, easy EMI options and a sudden craving for the Arts makes most of us fantasise about owning a killer Cam. You have unexplored creative energy bubbling within you and the boring humdrum of office life seems colourless.. and Eureka! You have an idea..

For a weeks and months you log into sites which review cameras and consult the many photographers, you happen to meet almost everywhere you go. Then you settle on your baby.

Its got a long lens, xyz mm, its black and it takes great photos of the clouds hovering above. You take those pictures and post them on Facebook with the tag line, “My first Photos with my brand new xxx Camera!”. You abuse FB the first few months and spam everyone in your friends list. Your friends who used to like most of your photos taken in a rickety old Nokia, start ignoring them.

As with The Bullet, this particular experimentation with quarter life crises peters out.

Al-ca-gal!

Some of us discover(rediscover) something spectacular – Alcohol. The dusky beauty adds meaning to life, purpose to weekends. Weekends become exciting. Pub-hopping starts!

The combination of rising prices combined with rising monthly EMI payments on your costly nothings combined with near stagnant salary, eat into your Pub-Hopping budgets.

Lakshmi Bar near BDA Complex, Banashankari, seems more alluring; and, monetarily makes much more sense. 🙂

You are one-step away from being a counter-kudka(Counter as in bar counter. Kudka a drunk). But, for you its time for fun. Its also time to make up for lost time you have spent not drinking! When drunk you fear the time when a creature comes and taketh awayth the bottle of Kingfisher Premium Beer; you shudder to think of getting married and losing all this freedom.

“Why don’t you come meet my parents? My dad is looking for a rishta for me.”

She was hot in college, ever so pretty… She loved me and I her. Yes, she has gained a few kgs, so what? So have I. Now,I barely make enough to sustain myself and she wants us to get married and have kids! Her biological clock is ticking, mine just started..

What about my beer!

I am still a kid. So what I have a stable job and my dad has built for me a 60-40 house in JP Nagar.. ITS NOT TIME TO GET MARRIED!

Either, its your Girlfriend on your case or, in some cases, your parents. “Yaavaga thamma maduve?(When are you getting married?)”, asks your aunt mischievously(everybody is either an aunt or an uncle) in one of the weddings your parents manage to drag you into. “Yaarannardru hudkondidiya?(Have you found someone?)”, is a double edged sword. Those who have girlfriends can’t answer honestly, those who don’t, feel pathetic that they don’t have one. Strange conundrum..

You make her wait for an year, thinking, “She loves me too much to not wait for me”. One day you are hanging out at your adda and a friend of a friend tells you that your girlfriend is getting married. You stand there for a few seconds.. stunned.

She was not picking up for the past 3 days and you never had thought twice about it. Your tiny world is coming crashing down now. The love of your life has succumbed to her parents wishes and whims.

She has blocked you on FB, changed her number, cuts off all lines of communication. Your common friends inform you that the engagement is next week. You are shattered.

“She told me she loves me!”.

The Bullet, The Digi-Cam, the brand new Car seems pointless. You are 24 and lost.

Lets study!

College was fun. Bunk classes, goto your adda near college, conveniently located to smoke-up, where none of your lecturers can see you. Plan trips and actually manage to go! Its been ages since you have been to any new place now. The last one was Gokarna for the new year, 9 months ago.

You are 26 now, your girlfriend has either left you or you never had one(better to have loved and lost, than not loved at all?). You have been working in the same project for the past 3 years. Nothing excites you anymore. Digi-Cam is safely locked up in the cupboard, turns out you are not that great an artist or just realised “Every other fucker out there thinks he is a photographer!”. Subconsciously, you don’t want a reminder how normal your life is. Nothing is hatke if everyone starts doing it. Why did so many of my friends turn to Photography? Bastards..

Time for something new – Time to do Masters in US! (Hell yeah!)

When it hits you, it really hits you.. The monotony of life is unbearable. You dream of dating white chicks, clubbing in Germany.. basically, getting away from everything you are. You want something new in your life. The current routine just doesn’t work anymore.

Masters is a perfect choice. Not only get a degree out of it, but a chance to settle in the country you studied in, should you choose to later.

Start studying for GRE, learn by-heart the meaning of every single word in the English language. Either Masters or you threaten quitting if your project doesn’t initiates H1B. “Onsite, here I come!”

You arrive to seek your version of Shangri-La. Finally!

6 months later you start missing home-made filter coffee, your friends talking shit after getting piss drunk in the local bar, the beautiful weather of Bangalore… The list starts expanding as long as you stay in Faarin.

Everything has changed!

You come home after 2 years of Faarin. Your anaemic friend is fat; your fat friend is thin. “Did he have a beard before I left Bangalore?… Huh.”

Some of your friends are married. In some extreme cases, have had kids! “How can a guy who behaved like a kid, when I left, have one?”

You get ready and text message everyone to come to adda, just like old times (Ah, the old times).. When you finally get there in an Auto(You had sold your bike, your first bike, just before you went to do your Masters), after cursing how Auto rates have increased, look left to find a spanking new Restaurant standing in the place where your adda used to be.

The one last remaining link to your old life has disappeared forever.

“Ok, I’ve tried to accomplish everything what I wanted. I’ve succeeded in some, failed in some. I am running out of ideas. Lets just say yes to Mom… Lets get married”

You do have fun with your masters. Meet new people, experience new things, see new places. You are at a good place.

Like any other night, you are skyping with Appa and Amma. They suggest marriage. You say no and that ends there. You get up and head for work, they go back to sleep. Next day, the insistence is a little more stronger. This time ‘No’ drags on to some 10 minutes. The day after that..

You finally succumb to parental pressure and say, ‘yes’.

But, you have seen the world. Have met new people and have become pessimistic about Arranged marriage. But, there is no option. You are in America, you can’t find a decent Indian Girl in the US(well, you can, but chances are low) of your same Caste and who meets your long list of parameter of a perfect woman.

Life has taught you some hard lessons. “How can I get engaged to someone whom I’ve met only 2 months ago?”.

“She is nice”, you admit, “but she is no..”, you zone out thinking about your ex. Besides, what if she is putting on a facade and after marriage is seems completely different to what she managed to projected as herself to be?

Haunting questions.

A little bit of you died the day you found out about ‘her’ engagement. After years, you have progressed to a point that you think about ‘her’ only once in a day. “Am I really being fair to the girl with whom I am going to get married to?”, you ponder. “Shouldn’t marriages happen out of love? Sure she is nice, but she is no..”.

“Its been so many years, I’ve not fallen for anyone, I’ve never even fancied anyone. Am I incapable of falling in Love? Has she broken me, perhaps, forever? Does she think of me, like I think of ‘her’?”

You actually get married, to someone who was a complete stranger only 6 months ago. Your life changes forever..

The 20s come to an end.

  1. Well written again, a collection of stories in and around us. Everyone at every point can relate to it. The beauty of these things is always lie gets better and the grass is always greener on the side. Live your life, make the best of it, take it as it comes and live to the fullest. Anoop we will talk over it in a bar, roughly a few months from now. Love it and keep enlighting us.
    Consulatation is free though!!
    Cheers

    • Thanks macha.

I wanted to write an entertaining piece, but ended up something drastically different. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with me!

Yes, we’ll have loads to discuss in our sittings. We always do. 🙂

The tragedy of the human condition is monotony is very lethal. People do strange things to escape monotony and boredom; Grass is greener is a side-effect.

      • Sameer

Loved reading the article .All of us can relate to this more or less.

      • bharat

Grass is greener actually where u water it Bro :-p 🙂

      • Milton Singh

Dude, it seems you have written my story, my friends story, my good colleges story, kindda everyone I met after college’s story… Hell I have entered 30s now, and still missing my twenties… The 10 rupees wala fried rice and gobi manchurian, now shelling out thousands of bucks ata posh resturant doesnt make me happier than the one plate fried rice getting snatched by four folks … Gosh I am missing life…

      • Abhishek Ananthram

I have been planning to write since ages, never managed to write. Instead happy with the quotations, once in a while.

    • This post was fantastic dude (stumbled onto your blog and staying here for more)! I could identify at least a dozen of my friends through this one, and I could totally relate to the rebel part of it myself. I am still in my late 20’s but for all that matters, I might as well be a bored middle-aged man having a mid-life crisis 😛

Anyways it reminds me of some beautiful quotations in a Julian Barnes book “The Sense of an Ending” …
      >>“This was another of our fears: that Life wouldn’t turn out to be like Literature.”

      >> “How often do we tell our own life story? How often do we adjust, embellish, make sly cuts? And the longer life goes on, the fewer are those around to challenge our account, to remind us that our life is not our life, merely the story we have told about our life. Told to others, but—mainly—to ourselves.”

      >> “It strikes me that this may be one of the differences between youth and age: when we are young, we invent different futures for ourselves; when we are old, we invent different pasts for others.”

      >> “When you’re young – when I was young – you want your emotions to be like the ones you read about in books. You want them to overturn your life, create and define a new reality. Later, I think, you want them to do something milder, something more practical: you want them to support your life as it is and has become. You want them to tell you that things are OK. And is there anything wrong with that?”

      >> “We live in time – it holds us and molds us – but I never felt I understood it very well. And I’m not referring to theories about how it bends and doubles back, or may exist elsewhere in parallel versions. No, I mean ordinary, everyday time, which clocks and watches assure us passes regularly: tick-tock, click-clock. Is there anything more plausible than a second hand? And yet it takes only the smallest pleasure or pain to teach us time’s malleability. Some emotions speed it up, others slow it down; occasionally, it seems to go missing – until the eventual point when it really does go missing, never to return.”

Well written , I can agree on somethings and not on the others. You know from a long time or know me decent enough. When you were referring Germany I thought it was for me :). In life you always have to have new experience if you know what your doing tomorrow your a dead man someone said. Also You don’t need human relationships to be happy, God has placed it all around us. You got find happiness in little things you do. I’m starting to be act or sound like a Philosopher . We have to talk n have a discussion on this !!

  3. Nandita.

Dude, are you okay? Sounded a bit low there .. Which part of Bangalore do you live in ? JP Nagar / Banashankari area ?

  4. sandeep

    • Uhhh..

I know Pedda Rowdy is a Telugu phrase, but it also makes sense in Kannada.

In Telugu, I guess it means “Big Rowdy”, but in Kannada it means “Imbecile Rowdy”, or “Stupid Rowdy”. 🙂

The reason I say all this is: I really don’t know Telugu and I’ve no idea what you just said 🙂 Kindly translate..

I kinda get the gist of what you said though!

      • pillarowdy

nanage sariyaagi english gothilla anna… lite teesuko.. chill maadi..

      • sunny

pillarowdy wrote that it seems it is common for guys to write like this these days and consider it cool. She also cursed you by saying “yavdadru baavige hogi biddu saayi” :p It’s her who’s saying all this. Don’t shoot the messenger 😀

      • I got that, after a friend translated a bit of it to me..

        You know what that means!

My very first troll! Yaaay! 🙂

  8. pillarowdy

Good article maga.. Half the way o thought u were talking about me.. Good writing style.. Next writing nalli maduve aadmelina story bari.. 😊

    • Thanks sisya.

Even Vishal above said the same thing!

That was what I was going for. That is one of my points. All of us are so alike, or I know people, and interact with people who are most alike to one another.

I wonder which one is true..

  11. While I really haven’t experienced the “Alcagal” and Girl Friend Part and i don’t actually own a bullet (though i really do want to go on some long drives on my bike), I Agree 100% about the marriage part of it man. Its like a midlife crisis which somehow i dunno why most of the IT guys go through.

A very well written article and your writing was fresh and up to the point. Keep up the good work

    • Hi Sriram.

Thanks. Alcagal is ever youthful. The best part is it turns back the clock too!

So, its not too late. Drink up, I say!

I am coming to Chennai on 5th. We’ll catch up for a drink 🙂

Nice Work dude …… indeed correlates with the life of most of us …. \m/

I finally found the solution for myself …..in the Bob marley’s quote-

    “Live for yourself and you will live in vain;
Live for others, and you will live again.”

    🙂

  16. Holy Crap! Seems like a reflection of my thoughts, atleast most of it, especially towards the end! Kudos bro!

  17. Sarvajeet

Story of my life.. well almost.. FML 😀

  18. This was awesome!! I guess most 20-something software engineer guys will definitely agree…:D
felt like you were reading my mind for most of the article!!

  19. Sambit

While I was in the middle of the writeup.. I was somewhat under the hallucination that may be am reading one of the latest books by Chetan Bhagat…!! No offense to a Great writer like him, But I was actually able to visualize what I was reading (something which Chetan Bhagat made me feel before) …!! Kudos to you 🙂

But on a lighter note, bro I hope this is not another:
“Time for something new : Pen down your thoughts (Hell Yeah !!)” 😉

  20. Awesome…couldn’t agree more… 🙂
    Cynosure

  21. krishna

You are in America, you can’t find a decent Indian Girl in the US(well, you can, but chances are low) – very true..

  22. Mast blog article saaaar! Sooper 🙂 Tumba ishta aytu 🙂 I guess you’ve put into words what 90% of the current 20s something youngsters go through. Love, college life, work, the ever attractive USA, marriage, ella onde blog alli bardidira.. Nice 🙂 Now I’m gonna read the rest of ur blog articles. 😀

  23. Anirudh

when i read the line “3 years in same project”,it stopped me dead in my tracks and i had to reread the article to make sure i am not in denial, suffices to say i failed.

  24. Shyam Singh.D

Nice article Guru !! i am not a IT guy,But really depicted the whole 20 story!!

    • Hi Shyam,

Its not about IT-people only. Love, boredom, ambition, curiosity is not the sole property of any one group.

I happened to be an IT-guy and know quite a few of them, so I wrote about it.

I didn’t write it ONLY about myself, as some of the hidden references are not from IT-guys at all!

  25. amazing narration boss! good stuff.

  26. Mint

Loved your replies along with the write up :p :p well-written and very well-connected to reality.

  27. Resurgent teen

Well, I came across this randomly! Just like anybody else, before I end up complimenting, I would like say about somethings about IT chaps that I’ve known. They have might have gone through some of this. But one thing I’ve observed is that they have not succumbed to vicissitudes of life.Instead they have broken broken the monotony of professional life by dedicating their time for others. They have found happiness by volunteering during their free time. They spend time with undepriviledged children.Thats where I find their life hatke from the typical story that you’ve presented.
What I meant was that there is life beyond apart from alcahal and photography. One need to find what u r passionate about.

    Keep writing.May be that’s your passion 🙂

    • Hi @Resurgent teen,

I’ve volunteered too and yes, I know many IT-pros who do so on an active basis.

Helping others has nothing to do with profession or any other factor than one’s own conscience.

Thanks for the comment 🙂 Keep visiting and sharing your point of view.

  28. kirthana

    nice one 🙂

  29. Dwarak

Awesome. I just have a small suggestion. I find only one phase missing out. The phase where one hits the gym after he is jealous of his friends muscles and paying a yearly payment for the gym to end up going only for one irregular month put together in our months 😀

    • My friend the other day was saying how I missed mentioning the guys who flunk a year in Engineering. Year-back(YB) in VTU(Visvesvaraya Tech University) lingo.

Their travails could be an interesting chapter, experienced by many.

Yes, yours is a correct observation too! I’ve personally not hit the gym, but I swim on a regular basis.

Improving one’s own physical image is a universal desire.

      🙂

  30. The story of every engineering grad in India! Very well written indeed. I’d like to know where the story goes from here though.

  37. I haven’t found an article which describes the 20’s of Bangalore IT hudga better… this one is so very true. But sadly for most of us, the enlightenment happens only when you get “out” of the 20s. Great post!

    Yaarannardru hudkondidiya
Am I incapable of falling in Love? Has she broken me, perhaps, forever? Does she think of me, like I think of ‘her’?
The lines you have picked are so effective … makes you stop and think – was that really about me or what? 😛

  38. raju

  49. sharath

    Wow nice writing!!
Am an IT guy too, but not a Bangalorean: P
Even aftr going through this, am quite exited abt being a bangalorean(very soon shifting from Chennai).
What I liked the most is the uphelding the locality in writing,as they say ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣ್ ವಾಸನೆ.

    • ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣ್ ವಾಸನೆ.

Dodda maathu. Really glad someone feels that way about me.

Thanks for the lovely comment. Will remember this one!

  50. Very nice article buddy. Total awesome..!! It’s really a collage of stories roaming around us. Thanks for making them together and yes I really can relate this with mine.. 🙂

  51. Stumbled upon this blog through Facebook and well done, bro!! You have quite effectively captured the mid 20’s crisis that most men go through. Though I can’t say this blog reflects my life, it does reflect that of 90% of people around. I guess the trick is not to get hyped by the green grass on the other side, but to see the greenery around you. Loneliness does suck though, however. But you learn to live with it and convert into a positive. Being lonely is a positive if you want your room to be as shabbily comfortable as you like or if you want to do a midnight ride on your Bullet just for some smokes and a tea from the highway.

Anyway excellent write up, bro. Keep writing 🙂

  52. Awesome post buddy.. Keep it up

  53. Reality with a touch of humour and acceptance. Loved the piece.

  54. Karthik

    A good read !

  55. Sachin Reddy

Being from J.P nagar (hanging out most of the time in bsk bda) and now in US for my master’s…for a moment i thought this was my story!!!…amazing stuff!!…

    Brilliant writing!
    Enjoyed every bit of it..

  57. Advait

Thank you for making me face reality, when i did not want to face it. I am doing masters now )

  58. Praveen

you missed gym and body building…. 😛

  59. aneesh

Very well written article.. am sure all of us can more or less relate to 80% of all the traits mentioned.. !!! I think another one that can be added to the list is ‘blogging’?!! No offense pls 🙂

  60. Naren R

Awsome post- hilarious. This made my day.I’m in the GRE/GMAT phase and i truly dont want an arranged marriage and wish to marry my girl who i’m fighting for.Sometimes i feel the life of every IT guy is so screwed up.Mid-life crisis.Keep up the hope guys :)Enjoy your 20s now and concentrate on your career..give it your best shot to come up in life.everything else will fall in place.peace!!

  61. LOL…Very true! I am a part of a project that acts as a change agent for the very same people mentioned above. So on a daily basis I meet people both from IT and BPO who are on this path, some in the beginning, some in the middle and some unfortunately in the end, who refuse to recognize that this the reality of their life, and even worse are the ones who recognize this but are too “Comfortable” or too “lazy” to do anything about it.

A new bike , a Back packing trip, a fancy car, A party and a drink every weekend, A corporate title, A “certificate” of recognition, A Gf, all act as the things that they hide behind when faced with reality , escape routes that they feel happy about , the reason that sustains them to continue doing what they are doing at least for the next two years, and then 2 more, and then 2 more… and before you know it… they are stuck in the rat race , to try and earn a living for their family and to pay the endless “EMI’s” ,

If I did not know first hand that these are are “people” that we are talking about, Human beings with blood and flesh and souls and dreams, I would have laughed my head off, as I have mentioned in the beginning of this comment.. but we are .. and everyday, it saddens me to meet people who do not Take Charge of their lives.. who do not do anything about this situation, neither for themselves nor for their society and even worse is the fact that they teach their own children and others to do the same .. Ever heard of ” Job Referrals”???

Now THAT is funny!!! ~ Good Article ..

    • How dare you take a shot at our IT-crowd, sorry my IT-crowd!

But, yeah, the pursuit of material things is damn annoying. I hate it when people ask my “Why don’t you buy a new smartphone?”. I am like “You fucker! I bought this Nokia with my first salary ever; and, it has the texts the love of my sent me”.

I was lying. I actually think this. But, end up saying, “I don’t feel the need to.”

Thanks for the comment 🙂 it was interesting!

  62. Adarsh

Iooks very similar to my story…Now reached US doing masters..Waiting for the next part of the twenties. Everyone stops the story there at marriage. No one wants to go further..:-(..

  63. pune

Superb !! So true it is !! typically explains crisis of the 20’s !! Every second person of this age has something to relate with it !!
    Very well written !!

  65. prateek

    Depressingly accurate.

very well scripted . I am 23 and I guess the phase is on the horizon..Escape from what u say , can i ,may i ,will i , should i ,do i .. dont really know , as i type i realise i am already in the madness of these tyms .

  77. u know wat i liked it. i was there in that stage but not in your shoes but your gf’s , i guess these 20’s are harder for girls i don wanna be judgemental but i feel like it ……..

    • You know what? I don’t really blame her.. She did what she wanted and had to do.

I am mature enough to understand that now.

The rule of thumb is: If your conscience is ok with and will BE ok with it in the future, you have made the wise decision. The important thing is never to lie to oneself. The whole human experience becomes meaningless.

The fact that you admitted to being on the other side is promising. 🙂

  78. Jayee

    Awesome blog…..just loved it…… 🙂

  79. Feels like it is straight out of my head ! Quarter life crises sucks… Cant wait for the day when il look back n laugh at it.

  80. babu

    almost sounded like mine

  81. Devi

That’s how life is, sadly. well written. and true to the core 😀

  82. Excellent observation. I see this happen all around me. Most of the engineers are frustrated these days not knowing what to do. Back in college people used to congratulate others on getting jobs, now they congratulate those who are quitting it. I wasted 4-6 months behind GRE and would waste few more preparing applications and I am not sure if I really wish to go abroad. Wish we were more aware about our surrounding and opportunities and not hop across everytime when the grass seemed greener.

  83. Rohit

Sakkath Super article.Truly inspiring to start “own blog ” and be different like everyone else.

    Jokes apart.. Splendid read.

  84. well written 🙂 nice work…

  85. Raghav

Very nicely written. while reading one can visualise the past reel..:D

  86. Somebody

Let me bite – as some one who did this go through this path (No bike, no camera, no bar – I was too poor to do any) – what is wrong with this life? Remember, you are just another average person. There is nothing unique about you or your life; there will be more people like you, and there are millions more.

Sadly, heroes and people who live a different lives from our own are very few and far between.. ergo the reason for them to be heroes.

Have you asked any such “alternative” guys? How good / bad was their lives? They would have felt jealous of you – ‘IT guy, maga – olle duddu sikkatte – hudugigal ellaru IT guy andhre ok antaare maduve maadakke’ (my kannada is a bit rusty, please forgive).

So the decision was made earlier, very very earlier – when you did your 11th. Remember? The master / professor asking you to join Maths/Physics/Chemistry/CS ? That was when the fate was sealed.

Yes, you can always try to do a different route but it takes hell a lot of time to get a foothold there. If you try, good luck and if you win – great for you. But if not, this is the sad life you are set for.

    • no matter how small u start of i am the same as u right now but i dream and believe that ill work hard !!! not for getting a girl but to live the life happily and fighting till the end to fulffill my dream never to give up dont give up broda m tellin u there is time in life just because ur poor doesnt mean we cant live !!! m telling u fighting till the last moment and living happy thats life belive me !!

  87. Harry

    Superrrr bro..!!!
This what happens 😦 . But how the hell need to get out of it.
I dont want in this way.I am also currently in the M.S phase 😀
How to get ou tof this rat race..?? Any Suggestions

  88. its just awesome bro i swear lot of people around me and the story around me i didnt know so many guys are going through the same thing nice i dont read much blogs but two thumbs up !! and a hive five if possible

  89. u9hu

I m 24 something, in that ‘MS Phase’.
What made you write this ? I mean a personal experience sumthin or just a typical fiction story?
I find it pessimistic. Not all story end up this way. I find it ‘cleverly written though far from reality. It is more of fabricated … leading to an expected end. You write only what people want to listen. You aggrandized things just like typical Karan Johar movies.
    Just an opinion.

    • I’ve actually not been to US, nor anywhere outside of 800 km radius around Vidhan Soudha.

I am very close to all my friends who have done most or all of these things and I just put myself in their shoes.

I know it sounds pessimistic, but it was an expression, I didn’t exactly plan it to the dot. I started writing the creative juices started to flow. Autopilot really.

  90. A very well written post. The thing about bullet is so true….You might want to consider writing about a successful love story as well…just saying..

  91. suresh

nice one, I wonder how is that every other guy is able to relate to the stories you have mentioned(that includes me)!!! is something wrong with our society or wrong within us 😐 😐

    • Nothing is wrong with none who read this and liked it.

The pursuit to be happy, to be content, to be different, to be cool, to be accepted is universal. After all we are of the same species.

A society or an individual who can look at oneself in the mirror with a touch of humour is a society worth living in. Rest are just phases of life.

  92. swaroop kishan

    macha,

    i’m just speechless !! hail !!

  93. Nishant

Seems like a story everyone can relate to

  94. bloody

Say shahadah bro . Your life will take a new turn .Awesomely exciting as you age . Thousands of people are feeling the change in their lives as I type . 🙂 🙂

  97. Bhargavi

very well written 😀 my parents shud definitely read this to understand that im not d only wierdo on this earth!
as for me – the camera thing has been in my head or a year now… I’m glad that i had a good break in between my ‘3yrs in the same project’ thing 😉 [10months onsite work… full freedom.. 😀 ]
and being a girl, the marriage bit has also hit me sooner… and for the escape plan, US things r going on in my head right now.. :p
i had even tried blogging.. 😉

    tough 20’s i say 😉

  98. Manoj

    Typical Story of every engineer..:(

  99. Sam

Interesting. However, random words that started with capital letters Really Bothered Me!

  100. Kamlesh

    What can i say….
its saying everything that’s going on in mind of 20-something IT-guy’s….

    super…
truly heart touching and heart winning…

  101. Arun

Very good. This is my first one of you. I will now read everything.

One more thing bro. There is an opposite side of it, of a large sum of people who fail to attain their Bachelors in Engg. and tries to drag their head out of it.

    • I personally know many of them. They did what they did for a variety of reasons.

They still talk about it with pain, so I didn’t want to comment on that part, as they are my biggest supporters.

Flunking in Engineering is not equal to Flunking in Life.

  102. 09105en013

FACT: most of the people who blogs, or writes answers on quora ,etc are IT professionals and Engineers
(actually its not a fact, i just said it, but i believe its true)
Now the point is ” Is it just our life which ends in such never ending loop holes ? What happens to people who go into army, psu, or who becomes professors, doctors, civil engineers, or who does MBA? ”
I don’t know, because we don’t get to hear from them as much as we do from people from our stream.
May be this is what happens in a job life, may be this is routine, I(we) don’t know.
May be we will be feel OK if we come to know what happens in their life

some body who knows please reply 🙂

    • blogger

There is a reason for it , why you hear so much from engineers . Just take a guess how many engineers India produces every year . Man …. we are everywhere . 🙂

  103. Chetan

    Fantastic Bro..!!. Sakathaagi bardidira… 🙂

  104. The best part about articles of these types is that you enjoy equally when you read the comments as when you read the article. 😛

  105. You sir, are a cool writer!

  106. jitu

well written…??…y dont u try going out sumtym….rather thn sitting in frnt of d pc and writing ur lyfs tale….dude…i tell ya…der r really better thing to do thn writing abt wt sum1 els is doin…and by d way…if u know so much abt d behaviour of 20 odd adults…y not write a book abt…i wd definitely read dat…bt this….nah…never….get a lyf man!!!!

  107. Wow.. Amazing write-up..From 20 to 30, you have covered it all.. Waiting for your observation from 30’s…..to 40’s :)….

  108. Bob Marley

Meh. These are the IT employees who don’t smoke pot.

  109. Vinay Surya

Nice…Amazin…..Most of these thing would have happened to most of us……The best part was goin to US or higher studies most of us think about that or either do it hahahaha nice one thanks bro 🙂

  110. Richa

Nicely written…. you forgot to mention about the passion for gym which usually rises between 20-30

  111. Prateek Shrivastava

That was just one awesome piece of work. It deserve accolades. Great one buddy.

  112. I saw it coming. And hence I am a doctor.
But then we have our pile of misery too.. just that its not relatable by so many people. Which kinda leaves our clan feeling lonely as well.
Anyway, great article. Simple but sums up all the facebook and whatsapp I see. Despite seeming vain and funny i guess there is some beauty to all the wars we start with ourselves. In the end we’re all just trying to be better. 🙂

    • I believe you are talking about the pursuit for happiness..

I have many many many many friends who are in various stages of their careers as Doctors, some are studying for entrance exams for PG, some doing PG, some finished, some practicing.

I think I kinda get what you guys go through.

  113. Ragav

Good one, appreciate your narrating skills…keep up with your writing a totally diversified field from yours, who knows u may become like Chethan Baghat one day, Good Luck!!!

  114. Kaushal

Nicely written, Could have also covered

    a) first DMAT account and gallery talks on stock market. Your views on Future.
    b) Taking Gym membership never going there
    c) Buying a guitar and lets rock the world
    d) In the end investing in property, taking hefty loans and paying the banks.

  115. emerald

The last line. “get married to someone who you knew for 6 months”. Does it mean you suddenly fell in love with someone new or is it the arranged marriage thing?
    Great post btw.

  116. Amruth

    Awesome one guru….

  117. Ravi Shankar

A Bitter but Obvious truth.. Very well-written..

  118. Fellow 20ian

Absolutely well written , I am in the starting of my 20’s and doing a masters in US :P. My life is exactly going towards all the things you stated above .

Should change myself from this same prototype !!!!

  119. sruthi

  122. JaiDeep

Exactly the way most of us head.. but the one who swims across the current lives his life.. well said bro..!!

  123. Liked the ‘You are 24 and lost’ part. Very good observations!

  124. Ex Bangalorean

Well written… I like long rides(but I’ll hire a taxi everytime :D)… i am trying photography and I’m really frustrated with mundane life here and trying to go “Faarin” – Worst part happens here!!

If you already did your masters right after ur bachelors and got a job in a product based company with no onsite – Imagine the frustration levels and the situation where you’re 26 and no choice of going Faarin with a reason of MS 😦 😦

  125. ITDELHI

kudos to peddrowdy dude. story simply touched me. we end up thinking same stuff after 5 yrs of career n remind college days. In college days we think of getting good job(during placement season) ,good salary, doing stuff we could not afford in college but after 5 yrs of IT 70K salary good car , swanky cell branded clothes all seems irrelevant . probably happiness live somewhere else

note: i purchased a guitar paid whole fees, attended few classes never went again to classes
still miss those moments and good friends

  126. Shilpa

Your article Brought back so many memories!! I am a girl from north Bangalore though. Came to US 6 years ago to escape arranged marriage 🙂 ..(thank god these IT companies gave us girls a much needed break and escape route)….. Had a strong will power to convince my parents about getting married to a Bengali guy I met during my IT training days. Got married 3yrs ago and now applying to B schools to explore other career avenues. I know so many guys and girls who have been through similar situations. Now that I am about to step into 30s I can tell you, you will laugh at your 20s when you reach here. The questions’ galore that you have , will only increase in size…. Some, you may find answers… Others, you will simply accept or forget about 🙂

  127. Abhishek

I’m 24. I don’t want bullet and dslr. I resigned from my job and i’m so happy. 😀

  128. Visakh

    great one! loved it!

One thing I wanted to add as a fellow IT guy, is the phase where you become a tourist fanatic. You just want to hit all the places in India worth seeing before you turn 30. After a half dozen trips, you understand with these tours, your money is taking a big toll and you find excuses to get away from friends planning the next tour 😀

  129. Abhishek

    Awesome..!!

  130. Anuj

Awesome post dude..Thought we r earning gud bt misn dos fukree friends 😦
…Do add me if ur on fb …mine id is anujtom@hotmail.com………

  131. Hahaha every one would want to tell u that you are completely wrong but they cant Because your specific related topic ” 20’s of IT employee” covers all the options and choices which he chose or left it out ….
So which ever option you choose you will always regret that you didnt select the other way around ….

    But nice try …. 🙂

  132. devendra

    master piece …………..!!

  133. sahanaram

    VeryNice 1 🙂
An article to people who think y only to me , y only to me ….
It says No baby its life and its going on like this with all …
So move on 🙂 choose which gives you happiness 🙂

  134. Isst Pitil odid ivatte first!! 😛
But No regrets!! Well Even comments on ur blogs r nice to read too!!
    Nice One

  135. Dash

Good one mate. Though i am a CA and spent the fist half of my 20s studying for it. Now Its the marriage bug thats out to kill me.. lol 😀 IT or commerce doesnt make much of a difference after all.:D

  136. Very well written. Great observations and nice blend of humour.

  137. Vamshi Annangi

Good one, appreciate your narrating skills…It connects at least 90 % of people.

  138. Rocket

Dude U have totally nailed it…. My jaw just hit the floor 😀

  139. swati sachdeva

I can truly relate to this story…having worked in IT for 15 months…….But then instead of MS I chose MBA and finaly I am back to college days…:) nyways very well written…:)

  140. Vignesh M

    Nice article. Very much realistic.
    Liked it.

  141. Arjun Narang

Bravo dude.. what an article.. I am sure most the people can relate to many parts of this article 😀 😀

  142. A very well written/expressed article….Totally loved it!!!
Like a lot of them said, we all definitely can relate to something or the other if not everything. I think people like me can relate to it much more ‘coz I am from Bangalore, been around the areas you have mentioned and am in the US currently…
Yene helu guru, college days fun matthe aa thara friends jothe time spend maadokke matthe saadhyane illa…Priceless!!!

  143. Tracy

Very well written – wish you also provided some insights as to what happens after the last line. Haha 🙂

  144. you gotta chase your Dream….. Rather than regretting you did not attempt…..

  145. Awesome topic to write about. Gave mixed emotions and above all well-scripted with excellent usage of decent yet trendy words. 🙂 Kudos!! Keep Writing 🙂

  146. Parikshit Choudhury

Dei dei…thats awesome da……superbly interpreted. humuroulsy depicted the sorrow state of a typical IITan male (Indian IT male). True..live live..enjoy the moment…piss off the past and embrace the future… :)..guess thats all matters.

  147. Santosh Mulimani

The thing which makes us to like these kinda articles is.. some or the other things of these kind might have happened to us and we come to corelate to it and we feel elated and secure that there are many ppl like us out there walking the same road and we take solace in that. Thats what I call ‘Mundane Life’. However the struggle one goes through to come out of it may be different..but its definitely WORTH it.

  148. Anil

    good one bro..:)
    Everyone want to be unique..:)
End up doing things which they dont like to impress others..:)
Finally endup telling the other choice would have been better..:)
Guys who enjoy wt they choose are the lucky one’s..:)
its all abt “Life is meant to be Happy..:)”
    in wt ever we do..:)

  149. Venkatesh

Dude, you piece is so influential that you are making a few people think back on their future plans (read few comments above). That needs some serious skills. Anyways, great write up. Sadly, I have passed all the stages and currently at the last phase 😛

Life has become such a cliche :/

    • Hi Venkatesh,

I am stunned too with seeing the response.

Some people are happy, some sad, some even angry. Some want the piece to continue into the 30s. People in different stages of the lives, co-relating this piece to theirs and opining.

Mixed feelings really for me when I read the comments section. Especially considering I had gotten 14k views until last week. This response to the piece is so overwhelming!

Appreciating the cliches are fun. I’ve too wanted a Cam, a nice ride, etc., at some point in my life, for however a brief moment.

  150. air bender

I bet the writer is another fraudster from andhra pradesh, going to US on a fake exp degree and fooling around gullible amercians there, His intent to marry the girl of same caste speaks volume about his attitude. bullshit

    • You are wrong almost on all accounts.

      1) I am not from Andra. I am a Kannadiga from Bangalore.
      2) I am not a fraud. I work for an IT-major. I consider myself a bit principled.
      3) I have never been to America. I live in Bangalore. This is something called a Fiction.
      4) I don’t intend to marry based on Caste.

Thanks for commenting though 🙂 Please visit again..

  151. Sandeep S

Wow!! So much similar to my life so far. Bike, then a DSLR on EMI.. My H1B is being raised and I have even thought of doing Masters in US. I have spent a lot for GRE coaching as well. But here I am, still confused :S
    Anyways, good one bro!! Cheers!!

  152. Vinay

Super, one hell of a read.

  153. Sumanth

Superb! Reading this story was more than a stress buster. Infact i could relate many things to my personal life. Thank you

  154. Karna

I am suspecting that you will write one more article about having children, raising them , getting them into school all blah blah about 30s ;-). I will definitely wit for that , nice write up keep it going don’t stop.
Except bullet and study in US I have done other remaining things :D.

Will see this space after 5 years or so 🙂

    • You will wait for years on end to read the next installment! Dude, you have patience..

I promise you don’t have to wait years and years.. Hopefully.

      Thanks for commenting 🙂

  155. Very nice article….which relates to almost all of our lives…..Good one….

  156. Anita L

I have just received marriage proposal from a 29 yr old telugu IT guy from B’glore, so now I know why he is so gloomy gloomy 😛 😛

    • Hi Anita,

      I am NOT a Telugu guy. I am a red-and-yellow-blooded Kannadiga.

The guy in question gets married, goes to US, meets new people, yet it sounded gloomy to you! 🙂

The point is even though so many things are happening and good things are happening, the basic instinct is to feel bored and disappointed. If one thinks hard, life is actually pretty good..

      Thanks for commenting 🙂

  157. Suhas Baykadi

I bow to the Master. Well written and 100% true to most individuals. Well.. at least in my case. Enjoyed a lot reading this.

  158. AJ

I like your concept and the idea of sharing it with other people out there but maybe next time just work on how it is being written in. I found most things were sort of scattered all over the place. doesn’t really have a continuation to any sub headings and even though it is split between headings things seems to repeated on over and over again in the last 2 parts..But well done for finding that time to write. Expecting More from you.

  159. Kom$

Wow impressive.. U nailed it so very well.. A true tromatic phase every 20+ goes thru 😉

  160. Bhagyashri

hey peddarowdy i did not got u r conclusion in this all crap, is it good thtu get actually married whom u have knwn frm 2 mnths ago, does it satisfies u tht evrthing changes forevr, evry day new surprises, everthing new, the best part is u dnt knw the person, thr is a lot of mystery and i think the only crap u did this all ,BCZ u wanted Change, it wasnt assured in wht way, but here it is………and one more thing life after ur MS does not suck, and u candefinitely find indian Gal in US,..

  161. Nikhil

In reply to Bhagyashri, It seems crap for u…? That’s how boys life…and abt marriage its good or bad never matters, we just have to go with the flow.

    • Bhagyashri

Hey Nikhil, For guys Marriage is just phase to get some, and after sometime its burden not enjoyment, and one more thing Nevre go with flow…

  162. loved it ….. good writing … keep on…

  163. Well done…so nicely summed up so many feelings in lyf…

  164. Nice one..I think everyone can relate to the story at some or other point..:D

  165. Triveni Chinadaupparige

Very true hope u guys learnt ur lesson 😛
btw r u married peddarowdy or still soup boy?

  166. hahahaha and I thought my life was different

  167. Common man

I’ve got a rush to punch you right hard on your chest and scream “MOFO YOU ARE LIVING MY DREAM, YET COMPLAINING??!!”

I’m in mid twenties; never drunk, never smoked, never chased girls, don’t even hang out with friends often – a “very good nice sweet brahmin boy” aunties might call. But I’m not. (Not a brahmin too.) Life was/is hard from childhood. Tell me about parental pressures.

I’m working as a slave in a small town “IT company” earning half my market value, bonded with an unreasonable contract. Yes, I was so ignorant couple of years ago to fall into that trap. I really like photography and travelling. If necessary, I can send you pic proofs for my interest. I can’t afford to buy any DSLR or Bullet which you threw away as a boredom. Having a girl friend is a luxury. FML!

But I’m going to do a roller coaster ride in a few days – break the bond, do some career misdeed (because I have experienced honesty doesn’t pay), get the IT job in Bengaluru and buy those gadgets as soon as I land there. In short, have started to obediently follow what a wise man once said, “fuck bitches, make money”.

(Speaking for the underprivileged like me and throwing some optimism at you.)

    • Common man

Btw, your blog post is rousing, man. Applauds! 🙂

Cool that your blog post is being shared across many social networks, dude! In fact, I stumbled upon here from Reddit. 🙂

      • Yeah, apparently so! My friends have been dropping messages in FB saying how they happen to see one of their friends share this piece..

        Very overwhelming really.

  168. I guess you are now in a phase of so called “Opening up oneself/myself in a blog”!! LOL seriously. I know IT guys don’t write often but non-IT guys do write. Its like a photography phase!! When you look back after a few years the blog is still there and you try hard how I could not write as often as I did.
Its not that we love monotony but it just that we don’t chase our dreams and we don’t have much else to do. When in 20’s where we need to pursue our dream we get a job and follow that ‘job’. When you are 30’s and you want to change you have come long and far and realise you cannot turn back now. Life marches on.
This is like your blog, pessimistic but this is reality.

  169. To all who can relate to it – Just Walk of this shitty circle right when you can and do what your heart tells you to…i walked out of mine three years ago and hell no, i don’t make big bucks and am probably the opposite of what you can call settled- but three years i have been growing with real experience and i am happy!

  170. Hey! True to the words.
But am curious how would then 30’s start ?

  171. Hi,

The piece was entertaining and there is no doubt about that! But, and there is always a but! 🙂

I have found your article very materialistic in nature. That is not how humans are suppose to approach questions about Life on Earth. Instead, a spiritual manner should always taken and mind it that it is not an easy path to follow.

Yes, we observe so many people doing so many things but it does not mean that we have to them precisely because other people doing them. Do the work that you have to do, not because you are suppose to do that work but because you Love to do that Work. Always have the thinking of achieving excellence, the extra pleasures will follow! And side by side, we have to associate our work with other things that helps in leading a sustainable and better life.

I have purposefully kept my comment with minimum words as possible so as to not propagate a hate speech! As I said earlier, I found your article entertaining but I would have found enlightenment if your conclusion touched some spiritual aspects about life. Anyways, an interesting read and will keep a look out for your future posts! 🙂

    Regards,
    Nishanth

  178. Maria

And those “white chicks” you’re having fun with… Do you think they have no heart? Do you think they’re disposable? Indian guys having fun here in the US are just being cruel to girls. Girls who don’t deserve being treated as a heartless object of your lust.
Not good, guys. We’re just like your Indian women, and it’s not good to use people knowing that eventually you will break our heart.

    • Hi Maria,

You are absolutely right. The treating women in such a manner is disgusting at so many levels.

Many of the things expressed here does not reflect things I’ve done or I think. Its just a reflection of things I see around me. Many of the things – like going to another country – is completely fictitious as I’ve never been outside South India.

Of all the comments, I liked your best, because you are first one to realize how racist, improper, offensive that line was. I was fully aware of that while I was writing it and I for not one moment feel similarly.

I’d like you to visit again and hope you never meet anyone who feel anything remotely as disgusting about women. I respect women and respect those men who feel the same as me.

Also, not all men or men from India are bad. I personally know a few who have found love in foreign shores.

Please do not feel that all men or Indian men are like that. We just are not.

I hope I’ve lowered the rightful outrage that you felt on reading that line. Please do visit again and drop by to comment and share your thoughts. I wish you had commented earlier so that your comment would be on top of the pile and everyone would’ve seen it.

      • Maria

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I don’t know your real name.
And thank you for touching upon this subject.
I’m a Russian girl in California, I’m a model. And many Indian guys working here are attracted to me. The thing is I’ve never met Indians in my life before I came here, half a year ago. I didn’t know much about your culture.
When I came I met a handsome Indian guy from the New Dehli, he was the first one I met, but know I know quite a few. That guy is attractive, his skin, manners, good attitude. But all that proved to be a nightmare to me. I fell for him, he used me and moved on. But I did and I still love him, I want kids with him. But no, I’m not going to talk about my personal drama. I’d like to understand the tendency, the way of thinking for you, guys.
After that I met 7 Indian men of 28-31 here, single, earning good money, who are playing hard just to take advantage of me, I guess any attractive girl. Pretending to be nice, to be sympathetic, doing some nice things… and all that just to take a girl to bed. And once they don’t succeed, they just cut you off. In the same time they know that eventually they’ll marry an Indian girl, probably on the basis of an arranged marriage.
I’m an educated girl from Moscow, but still I’m always “a blondie” to them. What kind of stereotypes do you have about foreign girls? Are we heartless creatures for fun? Particularly Russian blonde girls?

Thank you for hearing out my emotional story. Hope to hear some of your opinions.

        Regards,
        Maria

    • I feel so bad. I really do.

The people who are closest to me are not like that, I’d never be friends with people who have such an ugly mindset.

The reason is I think societal – why Indian men are so cruel to non-Indian women. Indians, men and women alike, are taught since kids that fair skin is beautiful. That is why most of the top top actresses here are fair skinned, in a country of either brown or dark skinned people. Only in India are skin whitening products are so popular.

I am not a saint and say I’ve escaped such influences, but I am, I think, wise enough to understand it, to reject it. There are many millions like me.

Regarding the attitude, India is largely a conservative society, a society which is undergoing massive change. its no Saudi Arabia and women are given full protection and freedom by the laws, but the society is going under a transformation. The society has not caught up to the laws, is what I feel.

In Urban pockets this change is most advanced. People from New Delhi have absolutely no excuse to behave like that and the guy you met was a bastard and a poor excuse for a Human Being.

Delhi is notorious for having the worst attitude towards women. Please do not interpret this to mean other cities are also the same. There is a lesser chance, much less, of you meeting such a closed minded, scum from South of India – Chennai, Bangalore, The thing is India has many sub-culture within a super-culture of India. Each have their own characteristics.

I believe in Karma. if you rip off someone day, somebody will do much worse to you. Those who behaved like animals will be treated like animals within their lifetimes.

I am coming to California next year for work and will be staying there for a few years. I have no plans to take advantage of anyone. Its just not me.

I love my country and my people. But, I feel sad when guys like those you have met behave a certain way and besmirch the good name of the land of Gandhi and Buddha.

Just like Renaissance for Europe and the Feminist movement in the 1960s in US, India is going through that phase, much faster process really. So, please have hope. I know I certainly do.

For every guy who will disrespect women, there is a guy who will uphold their honor.

I just read back what I have written, its so formal and political!! 🙂

I’d love to hear from you again.

  179. Dude your article is full of life. Its really reflects on our day to day life. Kudos for your observation and keenness on absorbing the fine details of life. Thank you for bringing out this article> doing a good hobby keep on with it– { YOUR WAY WITH THE WORDS}

  180. blogger

Nice one , Painted a good fictitious picture there ….. Though the topic of the post is bit confusing .. specially the word “Typical” . There is nothing typical about it . In my opinion it should be “Typical story of a 20 Something , Metro , Upper/ Upper Middle Class , Wannabe IT Guy ” . With all that Black Monster (Bullet) , The camera , The MS and off course The Heartbreak ….. Alcohol part seems somewhat logical. What actually happens to around 70-80 % of total 20 Something Indian IT Guys is , they work their ass out in collage to get a decent IT Job far away from their family (Some of them it after struggling for few months in off – campus drives) and then they crawl through each and every days frustration, fighting with mean competitive colleagues , Biased mangers , odd working hours , stupid work culture , recession , responsibilities , hair loss , family problems , raising house rents , missing friends , demanding girlfriends ….. trying hard to come true to people’s expectations….. crushing their each and every child hood dream …. and so many more things …..It’s sad but true .

  181. its so true it hurts! extremely well written, well paced, the works! kudos!
